And if you’re looking for something even more over the top, try the 2015 remastered version. In any case, this game is still very popular in 2020.
The last of us game was originally released in 2013, and it remains one of the best, if not the best survival video games, to be ever created. It took the audience by storm. It is the recreation of the most brutal and hostile apocalyptic world, manifested with infected creatures and absolutely savage humans, who would stop at nothing, but survive. The goal here is to protect a witty teenage girl from all sorts of threats, as she is the source of survival for humanity. The character onboard, Joel, is allowed to use an array of weapons, throughout the game, including rifles and shotguns. And heck, even baseball bats, if need be.
What’s so unique about the game, is the attention to detail itself, and the strategic mindset, required from the user, to survive, like crafting your own health kits, for one. The publisher, Naughty Dog, rolled out the remastered version, with a few upgrades, and support for higher frame rates, at Full HD Resolution. However, the original is yet to be topped. The game is exclusive to the PlayStation platform and is a treat for users looking for the best zombie survival strategy game, at least on the console.

The game is pretty much packed with action and is fast-paced. Zombies, at times, may become extremely aggressive, and jump on your from out of nowhere, which, in itself, is quite scary, frankly speaking. If we compare it to its predecessor, the game simply has more depth and definition, in terms of gameplay, incorporating five different game modes: Campaign Mode, Single Player Mode, Versus Mode, Survival Mode, and the Special
Scavenge Mode. Each mode is unique in its own way. All in all, the game is a pure keeper, especially in 2020.
Dead Trigger 2

It is rather old but provides quality updates, which makes it one of the best to play, on a smartphone, in 2020. The objective is simply to kill zombies while completing objectives and missions. Similar to other games of the same genre, there are few pieces of equipment and health to start off with. You may lose out on health, after being hit by zombies or get altered by catastrophes, such as; nuclear radiation. The graphics are also fairly decent. Strategic thinking required is lesser than our other picks, but it is there. Also, the game offers you complete flexibility to move freely in all directions, unlike most zombie-based games.

Almost every single aspect of the game is stellar. The story revolves around an immortal protagonist (the user), who has forgotten all about his past. The game commences with the user being in a cold mortuary room, where you first lay eyes on your dead friend’s skull. Pretty dramatic, right? The remaining journey is as enticing as the start. It involves the user, journeying through the mystical city of Sigil. You may come across many companions along the way. The game itself functions a bit differently. It is based on rules with campaign settings, similar to Dungeons & Dragons. It serves for the user to solve complex riddles and allows your character to develop in multiple domains.
State of Decay
This one is pretty much action-packed, in every element. The emphasis is more on strategy and stealth than anything else. You neither serve as a Zombie Slayer nor do you have unlimited resources to defend yourself with. The goal is to search and recruit new survivors, raid vacant buildings and other survival camps, in order to get your daily resources. Emotions also play a key role in your survival, as do the way you interact with outsiders. It’s as real as it gets. The story is also quite promising, but you have two choices: Follow or Focus on Survival. The game, regardless of its minor shortcomings, still stands out, from other zombie survival games, as it brilliantly incorporates gaming elements of stealth, shooting, strategy, and role-playing. More than a million copies of the game were sold, during the initial release, and it sets the same footprints, heading into 2020.

Dying light: The following is a sequel to the franchise’s first iteration: Dying Light. The gameplay is quite similar to its predecessor. It is essentially a horror survival game. For instance, the crimson heads will be a slow target during the daytime, but much aggressive and fast, during the night. Just like the previous iteration, the user may perform athletic abilities, like climbing ledges, jumping and zip-lining to attack and kill enemies. Additionally, the game also features a brand-new dune buggy, with few customizations onboard, and a separate skillset. The buggy allows you to travel and crush zombies, on the way. Dead Rising 4
Dead rising 4 is the fourth installment of the highly anticipated Dead Rising franchise, which sees the return of Frank West, the franchise’s main character, in the first two iterations. The game is a blend of survival, craftsmanship, character progression, and core action gameplay, including frenzy weapon combos. The game packs quite a punch. The biggest change, from the previous installments, is perhaps the abolishment of 72-hour timing mechanism, and the added co-op story mode. The game certainly takes the zombie-slaying experience to a completely new level. Other technical issues have also been resolved, with this generation of Dead Rising.
The Walking Dead: Season 1
As the name suggests, The Walking Dead: Season 1 is based on an episodic adventure, taken from the heavily acclaimed popular comic series, bearing the same name. The game is essentially divided into 5 episodes, with an additional bonus episode, up for download. The story follows the comics, commencing right after the outbreak of zombies, in Georgia. What’s interesting to see is the use of characters, at least most of them, which is quite unique. The main protagonist is Lee Everett (the user), tasked with protecting a young girl, from the outbreak of zombies, accommodating a group of survivors, to tag along. The character progression is quite unique, as it is the direct result of the dialogue choices you make, and actions you pursue, with a set of choices, during gameplay. Project Zomboid, is again, one of our unique picks. The story here is that, while facing a zombie apocalypse, your goal is not only to finish them off, and allow for a zombie free state, but rather how you deal with other pressing issues, as a result of the apocalypse. These include Hunger, Depression, Illness, Loneliness, State of Feeling of Deprivation, and much more. Hence, the game offers a promising experience, based on brutal realities, and more so, practical. The objective is to survive in a quarantined country filled with zombies as long as you can. In order to survive and live longer, you are required to build a base, scavenge for food, while avoiding direct contact with zombies. It’s a very good strategic zombie-based survival game, and is one of the better choices for 2020.
Into the Dead 2: Zombie Survival
Another one for our mobile gamers. Into the Dead 2: Zombie Survival offers a gameplay experience, that speaks for itself. The immensely popular game’s objective is to try and rescue your family from the crimson heads. In order to achieve that, you must evade a pack of zombies, out to kill you. The game may be played in three different modes: Story Mode, Daily Mode, and Survival Mode. The game evokes a feeling of fear and aggression amongst users, yet they have to be at the top of their toes, in order to dodge the cheeky zombies. This pick is very different from the others, not in essence, but rather, the platform. Urban Dead is a popular browser/ text-based MMORPG, set in a fictional city,
following a deadly zombie apocalypse. You may begin with either, as a zombie, or as a survivor, with various skill sets for each character. Players can also become zombies, and likewise, zombies can be resurrected. What’s interesting is that all characters are ‘User-controlled,’ and the game doesn’t feature any ‘Non-player’ component. Despite your selection of character, the character will gradually grow and gain advanced characteristics, with experience points, and specific actions. All in all, the game’s a compelling package.
Again, we welcome you with another one of our Android picks, for our smartphone gamers. Don’t let the name confuse you, the game actually packs quite a bunch, and is really interesting to play through. Scientists have basically discovered an alien artifact, and in the process of activating it, the scientists get devoured by monsters.
The objective is pretty much to survive in a new world, filled with creatures and monsters, in an attempt to fix the mistake of the scientists.
